SpaceKnow looked at residential neighborhoods and forests which were affected by the recent 2018 California wildfires. Our platform gives users the ability to view changes over time to specific areas of interest. Once a user defines their area of interest, they can choose from a number of algorithms to detect changes. For the California wildfires, we used Houses and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) algorithms to visualize and quantify the impact on both residential homes and surrounding forests.
Here’s a residential neighborhood, where on July 16, 2018, there were 197 homes, but after the fires swept through, only 147 remained:
