The recent conflicts in Myanmar resulted in thousands of IDPs (Internationally Displaced Persons) fleeing to Bangladesh. Thousands of Rohingya people’s homes in the Rakhine State were burned by their neighbors and intentionally bulldozed to create spaces for Buddhist families. The result of the ethnic clash is visualized in satellite imagery and provided with analytics on our platform. SpaceKnow is capable of overseeing ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crisis through Machine Learning algorithms which can reveal trends or abnormalities in the world.
Fires in Myanmar
The fires occurred from December 2016 to April 2018 and burned over 50 houses that were observed with satellite imagery. To examine the region of the fires, SpaceKnow applied our user-friendly platform which gives users the capability of observing trends over time in any region they define and select. The visualization below reveals the impact the fire had on the affected zone. The platform highlights what is being detected on satellite imagery and the data which is available for download after the analysis is complete.

Depiction of the increase in urbanization representing the surge of refugee settlements in Bangladesh, making it one of the largest refugee crisis. The fighting began in early 2017 when Buddhists attempted to eradicate their Muslim neighbors. In effect, the crisis has increased population of refugees in Bangladesh viewed highest in December where there was a surge viewed by analytics in satellite imagery.
Expanding Refugee Crisis in Cox’s Bazar 2 in Bangladesh
We utilized satellite imagery to run our urbanization algorithm over Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. Urbanization is represented in orange in the imagery. On our platform users can also export the data and receive deeper insight into the analysis such as area covered by roads or urbanization, information on the satellite used, time photo was taken, and date.
The Rohingya crisis created the need for expansion of larger refugee settlements for families fleeing Myanmar’s ethnic cleansing. SpaceKnow tracked the development of camps in Bangladesh by using roads and urbanization algorithms on our user-friendly platform. The worsening of the crisis has attracted much attention on the world stage and is visualized on our platform.
In March 17, 2008 in the selected region where we looked into in Cox Bazar, Bangladesh there was 3.3 acres of urbanization in that area.
By March 7, 2018 urbanization reached 19.2 mile² in the selected polygon where we looked at in Bangladesh which is most likely due to an increase of refugees fleeing Myanmar.
We observed villages which were burned from 2017 in the Rakhine state, below are data representations of the ethnic violence.
The decrease in urbanization is detected by algorithms which use Machine Learning to depict the areas where the loss of houses represents the homes of Muslim families.
