The Kemper Plant
The construction of the Kemper power plant, a structure of steel, concrete and more than 170 miles of piping, has been facing numerous problems, leading to several deadline delays and rising costs.
Only recently the opening of the plant has been pushed back once again to August 2016, almost three years behind schedule and billions over its original budget.
Spaceknow brings you high-resolution satellite imagery thanks to which you can view the site across time and gain a deeper insight into the construction of the Kemper plant.
The 582-megawatt power plant is located in the middle of southern Mississippi pine forest next to a new surface coal mine that provides the plant with a fresh supply of lignite coal.
- 2010 – beginning of the construction project
- 2012 – start of above-ground construction works
- 2014 – start of power generation
- 2016 – operational testing phase
Following satellite images show the Kemper plant between 2010 and 2014, capturing the site during key stages of the construction project.
